Challenge Homework
Challenge Homework is a monthly at home project that your child is responsible for completing. Each month there are different projects based on the monthly theme (Science, Writing, Social Studies, etc). Students only have to choose one each month. This is a project that they should be able to complete on their own. They might need some guidance from you in regards to time management. This will start in the month of October.
October Challenge Homework
Projects are due on: Thursday, November 1st
*see me if you need an additional copy of the Preamble information.
This is your very first Challenge Homework assignment. Please read through the following list and choose one to complete at home. You have most of the month to complete, so make sure you set up a plan of action. Perhaps pick your project during week one. Week two, gather all supplies needed and make a rough draft. Then work on and complete the project over the remaining time you have. Mom and/or dad can assist, but you are the main designer. Have fun, be creative and make it an original. This will count as two social studies grades. Be techie…feel free to adjust the project to bring in a tech element. Rather than a chart maybe create a poster using glogster, or a PowerPoint.

- Pretend you are an Explorer or Viking from long ago. If you were planning to travel and explore a new land, what items would you bring with you? Remember, items today were not invented or available during this time period, so choose wisely. You need to create a chart on large paper that includes: a list of ten most important items, a small drawing of each item as well as an explanation of why you would need these items.
- Imagine!!! If the astronauts in the United States space program were to discover a planet occupied by a group of people, should we send explorers or settlers to the planet? Write a one page essay that describes your thoughts and perspective about this idea. Make sure you include strong support for your position.
- Memorize the Preamble, the beginning of our U.S. Constitution. The Preamble states the purposes and principles for writing it. It is one long sentence that begins our Constitution, for the security, peace and freedom of all people. You also need to memorize the sign language hand signs. They are attached. Once you have learned both, you will recite it in front of the class at the end of the month.
- Plan a Colonial town, just like many of our past Colonial leaders did. Decide what shape your town will be and how many streets it will have. Think about what parts of the land you will use for town buildings, animal grazing areas, and farms. Draw your colonial town on a large poster board. Give your colonial town a name and make sure your drawings are specific and obvious. Make sure you include all your new town will need for its’ people.
- Design a travel folder from the early to middle 1800s about a trip people could take in the United States. Tell where the trip will go, how people will get there, how much it will cost and why people should make the trip. Add maps and pictures of the places you will visit. Try to visit at least 3 or 4 places anywhere in the U.S.A.
- Type a 2 page report about a U.S. President. This will require some research, which will be easy to find on the internet or our Workman library. Tell us all that you learn about your chosen president. Then design a silhouette of your president’s head on black paper. Cut out and display your typed report in the center.
